Is cosleeping with babies safe?

I don't know much about this, but heard that moms sleep with their new babies in the same bed.  Practiced in other parts of the world, but is this done in western society?  Is this safe?

How do baby apes sleep?  I think they all co sleep.  Also common in many parts of the world.

This web page talks about a pediatric review article which advocates co sleeping.

Check out this cool thing that helps cosleeping:

it's called a secure sleeper for those who are worried about rolling over a wriggling baby.  but i read that people naturally will avoid squishing the baby, kind of like how you don't roll out of bed accidentally.
